Pasture workshop planned for Sept. 16
ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — A Pasture Walk and Pasture Planning Workshop for Horse Owners will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center – Clarksville Facility, Folly Quarter Rd.
The event is being sponsored by Maryland Cooperative Extension in conjunction with Howard and Carroll County Soil Conservation Districts, Natural Resource Conservation Service and MidAtlantic Farm Credit.
At the morning pasture walk, participants will view the proposed location for a rotational grazing demonstration on five acres at the new University of Maryland Equine Studies Unit and will have the opportunity to discuss techniques for renovating/reclaiming pastures, pasture grass identification, noxious weed control, and composting horse manure.
In the afternoon, attendees will use real information from the site to practice designing a pasture system for a small acreage. Local and state resource personnel will be available to assist.
The cost is $10 per person and lunch will be provided. Space is limited, and registration by Sept. 8, is mandatory. To register, contact Mrs. Carolyn Kulp at the Howard County Extension Office at 410-313-2707.
Horse Care Clinic at Days End Farm Horse Rescue
LISBON, Md. — “If Only Love Was Enough” is the name of the two-day Horse Care Clinic being offered by Days End Farm Horse Rescue on Saturday and Sunday, August 19 to 20.
Designed for long-time horse owners and those new to horse ownership, the clinic, Levels 1 and 2, will be taught by professional equine instructors.
Participants will learn about horse psychology, health and safety; hoof and dental care; how to examine a horse’s and take vital signs; care of older horses and emergency care; and nutrition and parasites.
Participants attending both days will also receive practical advice on trailering, boarding and other need-to-know horse details. At the end of the clinic, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion.
The clinic is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The fee for each day is $40.
